Title problems

In Texas, the title proves you own the car, so the buyer needs it to transfer ownership. But title problems are common — and most of them can be fixed quickly. Here's what to do in each situation.

If you lost the title

If the car is titled in your name in Texas, you can request a certified copy of the title from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) using Form VTR-34, either by mail or in person at a TxDMV regional service center. Once you have it, you can sell normally. If you're not sure where the title is, tell us in the form — we'll explain the fastest route for your situation.

If you have a salvage title

A salvage title means an insurer declared the car a total loss, usually after a wreck, flood, or hail. We buy salvage-title vehicles. Expect the offer to reflect the damage history, but it's often far better than scrap.

If you have a rebuilt title

A rebuilt (formerly salvage) car has been repaired and passed inspection. Rebuilt cars can be hard to sell privately because many buyers and dealers won't touch them. We will. Tell us what was repaired and we'll make you an offer.

If the title isn't in your name

Inherited a car, bought one without transferring it, or the title is in a relative's name? These situations can usually be resolved with the right paperwork — for example an heirship affidavit for an inherited vehicle, or getting the previous owner to sign. Every case is a little different, so call or text (832) 877-6402 and we'll help you figure it out.

If there's a loan on it

A lien on the title is no problem — see selling a car with a loan.
